Like the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, who grew up here, the region Vysočina presents itself differently on the border between Bohemia and Moravia. The rugged highlands are characterised by high rock formations Čtyři Palice and Devět skal, the dense Žákovy hory jungle and mysterious moors and ponds. On the other hand, flower meadows and towns with three UNESCO monuments invite you to explore the harmonious landscape in silence by bike. This varied section of the Iron Curtain Trail is a great experience for both pleasure cyclists and active holidaymakers.
The town of Jihlava in the heart of the region is worth a stopover. The city is famous for its former silver mining and the fact that the composer Gustav Mahler spent most of his childhood and youth here. Every summer a famous music festival takes place in his honour. The town's landmark is the Mother of God Gate in the medieval town centre. Also worth seeing is a labyrinth of mysterious catacombs, 25 kilometres long and the second longest underground labyrinth in the Czech Republic.
The town of Telč (Tel) owes its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List to an enchanting market square with pastel Renaissance houses. The pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk on Zelená Hora, which attracts visitors from near and far with its extraordinary architecture, also has UNESCO World Heritage status. The small town of Třebíč (Trebitsch) with its Jewish quarter is the third UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Iron Curtain Trail section in the highlands between Bohemia and Moravia.
Cyklistika na Vysočině
Dvě vysočinské cyklotrasy, které na dálkovou trasu EuroVelo 13 navazují ve Slavonicích a Dešné u Jemnice, se protínají se v Jihlavě a propojují tak metropoli Vysočiny s rakouským regionem Waldviertel. Nabídnou cyklistům příjemnou změnu terénu. Jízdu rovinatou krajinou vystřídají výšlapy do kopců a sjezdy do údolí s malebnými výhledy.
Na cyklotrase č. 16 potkáte město Telč, jehož historické jádro náleží ke světovému dědictví UNESCO a patří k nejcennějším památkovým rezervacím Moravy. Cestou z Telče do Třeště nelze minout gotický strážní hrad Roštejn. Další zastávkou může být Jihlava s druhým největším podzemním labyrintem v ČR. A odtud dál přes Polnou se zachovalou židovskou čtvrtí až do Hlinska s památkovou rezervací Betlém.
Cyklotrasa č. 26 vás povede z původní hornické osady Jemnice, již každoročně zdobí historická slavnost Barchan, do Moravských Budějovic. Odtud je to přes Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou s krásným barokním zámkem ve svém centru jen kousek do Třebíče. Třebíč se pyšní souborem památek světového dědictví UNESCO, jež tvoří Židovské město se hřbitovem, zámek a bazilika sv. Prokopa. Cyklotrasa končí opět v Jihlavě, odkud se lze po cyklotrase č. 16 vrátit zpět na EuroVelo 13.
